"Running," Tatum Treffeisen's latest single, is refreshing, honest, and unfiltered. New York City singer/songwriter Treffeisen knows a thing or two about tapping into the emotional force of music, and "Running" is yet another example of her skill at channeling her experiences into compelling tunes.
Narrated while training for the Berlin Marathon, "Running" is a blunt and raw meditation on persistence and the fragility accompanying an attempt to make yourself surpass the impossible. The song typifies Tatum's style, an openhearted sheen of vulnerability and honesty. Stripped down in production, much of it was made in the home studio, and after all, the song has an intimacy that lets the emotions come through without distraction.
Tatum Treffeisen's path from musical theater and dancing to a cappella during college undoubtedly informs her songwriting, but she's shone brightest in her solo work's minimalism and barebones appeal. In "Running," her voice is short-breathed, tired, and eager all at once, and although the song is, on one level, about physical stamina, on another, it is also about emotional endurance.
The track is a fitting follow-up to her debut EP, "Sleepless Nights," and once again adds to her collection of songs we can all deeply relate to on a human level. Whether you're a marathon runner or just trying to make your way in life, "Running" is a point-blank reminder of the power of persistence and the beauty in the struggle.
