Hailing from dystopian 2045 Philadelphia, this time-traveling genre-hopping band Bring Torches is on a mission. Their latest wave of sound, "Not My Place," is an enticing piece of what a distant future could sound like if it were punk philosophy colliding with space-age synths in a jazz-lit dream.
"Not My Place" is an epic emotional journey hidden under a piano melody swells with quiet horror. Its wistful lead melody, courtesy of the glistening soprano sax, gives the otherwise electronic pulse an air of memories that sounds like it could have been programmed on a synthesizer inside a time machine. The result is an intimate and cosmic sound, a love song that travels between dimensions.
MERF, an OG Morph, the band's half-human, half-bull bassist and co-founder, lends myth to the track, anchoring it with a smooth undercurrent while Ike Lannigan's keys guide its direction into a starry, distant orbit. It's romantic but not sentimental. Effective, but without any mawkish overindulgence. It's a calculated tension, maybe the push and pull of love in a world where human-animal hybrids battle for freedom under a fascist government.
Bring Torches is set in a lore-lovely, sci-fi-seasoned world where rebellion is rhythm-bound. Their upcoming debut album, "Secession of The Plebs," sounds like a wild ride through genres and ideologies, and "Not My Place" is the perfect starting gate. With flavors of prog, power pop, punk, and even ska seeping into their developing sound, this first offering is less about fitting in and more about taking up space musically and metaphorically.
"Not My Place" taps the yearning between temporal lines, a commingling of digital edge and analog warmth. It's a song that makes you feel like you're floating through the stars while simultaneously having one foot in the revolution. If this is what the future sounds like, say no more. Bring Torches is leading the way.
