Faith In Foxholes creates magic with new single "Summertime"

Faith In Foxholes, the solo project of New Mexican multi-instrumentalist Lucas Floyd, returns with "Summertime," a shimmering indie-pop groove that's akin to flipping through sun-faded Polaroids from a summer that may or may not have ever existed. It's also vividly tangible and dreamily intangible, like a repeated memory.

Anchored to a dancy drum and bass backbone, clean, melodic guitar lines, and the inimitable warble of a classic Sylophone, "Summertime" finds Floyd leaning into simplicity, sincerity, and a quiet tug of the heartstrings. The track saunters in with confidence that it knows precisely what it is and wants to be. The vocals are cool, almost spoken, a wonderful juxtaposition to the rhythmic imperativeness of the backing. It's the sound of somebody not trying to impress you and, in that way, totally reeling you in.

A song that touches on love, loss, and the passage of time, "Summertime" sidesteps standard tropes. There is never a dramatic crescendo or an overwrought sentiment, no more than a gentle unfolding of feeling to a backdrop that is as melancholic as it is in motion. You can dance to it, cry to it, or just let it wash over you. "Summertime" shows that he's found his lane, which is scenic. With each note, Faith In Foxholes reminds you that sometimes the most basic songs are what nuances them into something lasting.
