Raleigh-based trio Goddamn Wolves find indie rock's tender, gritty sweet spot with their newest single, "Later Than You Think," which is everything fans of the genre didn't know they were missing. Taken from the band's most recent offering in the form of "The DOOM EP," the track introduces a new sound that feels consistently piercing, with harmonic hooks intertwining with raw sentiments in a way that feels effortlessly authentic.
The song is a turning point for the band, musically and sentimentally. It's the second song fronted by bassist and vocalist Laura McCullough, whose voice is delicate and arresting. She locks into Chris Weilding's guitar lines and vocal harmonies with the fluency of old pros and fashions them into a lush sound cocoon that is emotionally cleansing you. Anchoring the track is Drew Foglia's propulsive drumming that infuses it with an alluring sense of unpredictability that keeps you leaning in.
"Later Than You Think" is in the band's alt-rock DNA, think Pixies-style tension meets the melodic clarity of the New Pornographers. But there is also a modern edge, an angularity that is very much of a piece with newer bands like The Beths or Bully, to make the song feel like it has that wonderful duality, both of the past and the present.
