Los Angeles singer-songwriter jeanie makes a potent opening statement with her debut single, "Lady Who I Love." It is a soulful homage to motherhood that is both classic and satisfyingly personal. Co-written with Australian filmmaker-turned-songwriter Christy Lamb and produced by Marc Orrell, it colorfully corrals the artistic influences of unlikely bedfellows for a sound that is fiercely intimate and universally anthemic.
The singer's new song has its roots in a spontaneous, bittersweet moment with her daughter. "Lady Who I Love" is a memory set to melody. Said softly but with authority, jeanie's voice is one part Christine McVie, one part Sade, and totally her own, with a welcoming warmness and wistful sweetness that plays on in your head long.
Her delivery has a rough-hewn grace, making one feel as if they're eavesdropping on a heartfelt conversation between generations. "Lady Who I Love" is a warm, groovy, and deeply personal meditation on love, time, and the changing relationship between a mother and her child, no small achievement for a debut movie.
The production, all recorded in Orrell's Silver Lake home studio, is another thing of beauty. It's lush but not overwrought, with just the right balance of analog soul and modern polish. You can hear the gentle glow of titans like Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, and Diana Ross throughout the track, but it's refracted through jeanie's vision, which is grounded, emotionally honest, and deeply human. With this initial release, jeanie is pulling us inside her world. And if "Lady Who I Love" is any indication, it's a world worth remaining in.
