Pemalang's indie alchemists, Retronomes, are back with their third single, "You (Delusion)." It's a slow-burning track between a nagging memory and a sullen sigh. Melding nostalgia for the 1970s with the ambient wash of Dream Pop and the chaotic spirals of Psychedelic Rock, Retronomes produces a sound that is both timeless and emotionally exposed. It's a mirage, all shimmer and softness but strung with a melancholic punch.
It was written by Fahri Bayu Putra, Yogi Tabah Prastyo, and Barep Fajar Bayu Aji and deals with the emotional disintegration that time, or at least the wait for someone who may not return, can bring. The song's spare lyrics are scorched with melodrama, but each line is a kick in the gut, the humble fact of hoping too much. It is heartbreak in whispers, not screams.
"Delusion" is also a DIY effort to be proud of. Recorded over two intense days at Pickaso Studio in Pekalongan, the band kept everything in-house, and Yogi also mixed and mastered the record, a choice that pays off in the song's eerie cohesion. Fahri's vocals glide lightly over a warm sea of bass, shimmering guitar licks, and soft, beguiling drums, and each instrument captures the emotional heft beneath the song's ethereal surface.
The album cover, a white T-shirt floating over a dark ocean, is surreal, minimal, and slightly magnetic. Courtesy of Fahri it beautifully complements the track's themes of emptiness, resignation, and delusion. "You (Delusion)" is a song that hangs beautiful, inscrutable, and just a little haunted.
