Belgium's craziest rock 'n' roll trio slams a punch of human vanity with their latest. The Sonic Redemption drops "Pissing Contest," a cheesy howl at human conflict. Racing through like a bar room scrap that has been noise-checked with pure punk adrenaline, the song is little more than the aural equivalent of observing two squirrels wrestling over one nut, ridiculous, unnecessary, but utterly impossible to ignore.
Led by Dominique De Vos, who obviously never got the volume-knob memo, they sound like they recorded this while crashing a demolition derby. His gravelly, sneering delivery slices through the track like a rusty chainsaw, pulling you headfirst into the fray. And chaos it is, but not the accidental kind. It's organized chaos, a glorious cluster everyone involved clearly means to happen whenever they introduce another holy racket or stomping.
Guitarist Jelle De Vos adds an unfiltered, electrified swagger to the mix and riffs as if attempting to exorcise the ghosts of every punk band that ever smashed up a stage. There's a whiff of familiarity in his playing, but, like everything, it's filtered through his own rowdy, youthful conviction. And there is Bram Decrock on the drums. Every beat plays like a punchline to a joke about how seriously we take ourselves.
The lyrics to "Pissing Contest" are snarky and sarcastic, and dripping with irony. It's not a question of winning or losing. It's about how ridiculous the spectacle is, and this needs to have the upper hand, outdo, be louder, be more assertive, and be right.
The Sonic Redemption not only noises the up, but they also have something to say, and "Pissing Contest" is a gloriously unhinged megaphone-bothering middle finger to the ego games we all play. It's rowdy, raw, rock 'n' roll at its most pure, and simple, and we could use more of that.
