German sound alchemist Volker Millach has again outdone himself in turning conventions with the distinctive new release, "Pretentious Punk (Remix 2025)." This is a confidently unorthodox reimagining of indie-rock outfit Protonaut's 2021 original. Milch transforms the song from one rumbled by raw guitars and nervous energy into a brooding, synth-heavy remix that perfectly combines retro-futurist fever dream meets underground electro confessional.
Milch has exhibited finessed emotional translations from his early days in an electropop duo to more navel-gazing solo excursions that have taken up most of his time since 2019. With "Pretentious Punk (Remix 2025)," he is remixing a feeling. Pulsating with darkwave sensibilities, the song rolls in like neon fog, nostalgic yet strangely invigorating, playful yet pensive. It's moody in the best way, like dancing with your doubts under a disco ball.
Instead of stripping the source material to the bone, Milch leans into those bones and constructs an entirely new skin dripping in analog warmth, shadowy beats, and an entrancing sense of movement. It's the sort of track that could sit on a playlist with The Cure and Roosevelt or ensnare you in the back room of a Berlin club at 2 a.m.
Volker Milch once again demonstrates that he reimagines trends. "Pretentious Punk (Remix 2025)" is not so much a remix as a renewal. And if this is the direction the indie-electro scene of 2025 is heading down, we're all in for one hell of an enjoyable downward spiral into synth.
