Straight outta the energy of Surry Hills, Sydney-based duo Bow and Arrow are kicking it hard with their massive new release, "TRIAD." This three-piece dynamo, comprised of siblings Mindy and Mitchell Kwanten and their long-time collaborator Jack Hickey, has managed to carve out a niche in the electro-soul plane. But with "TRIAD," they're out in front.
A rhythmic pulse at work here, a bit sensuous and a little bit charged, that just can't be denied. You're drawn deep into the orbit of something feral and primal yet brilliantly polished. The song teeters between sobriety and abandon in that way, crisscrossing enticing rhythms with the sort of brash terrific that only experience musical and otherwise can provide.
Mindy Kwanten's vocals are magnetic on this one. Her approach is slick and cutting, honeyed and cryptic. You can just picture her owning the stage, as she did in their unforgettable show at SXSW Sydney. There's a playful threat in her voice, a flirty lilt that makes you want to hang on to every note. Combined with Mitchell's rhythmic dexterity and Jack's production sleight, "TRIAD" isn't so much a song as a late-night conversation in aural form.
Their First Nations heritage weaves an immaterial thread throughout the track, anchoring the layers of electronic ease in tradition, history, and identity. This combination of modern and antediluvian, earth and ether, imparts the music of "TRIAD" its peculiar depth.
An unspoken confidence shines through on "TRIAD," indicating that Bow And Arrow is here not just to jump into whatever is hot but to forge worlds. This band works in lock-step creatively, unapologetically, and tied intimately into the sounds they love. And on "TRIAD," they've handed us a cut that grooves, seduces, and lingers long. Bow and Arrow are making music and creating a universe, and "TRIAD" is the perfect entry.
