Elon Musk Claims Donald Trump Would Have Lost The 2024 Election Without His Help

In what some see as a shocking and hot take that only future historians will be able to fully appreciate in all its boldness, controversial entrepreneur Elon Musk claims to have given Donald Trump his 2024 presidential victory.

Firing back at recent remarks from President Trump, who said he was "very disappointed" in the performance of the Tesla and SpaceX CEO, Musk did not mince words. In a June 5 post on X (formerly Twitter), Musk wrote, "Without me, Trump would have lost the election." The brash billionaire, who briefly served in a government-appointed role as Head of the Department of Government Efficiency earlier this year, took to his mega platform of a Twitter account to clap back at the former president's apparent display of ingratitude.

Musk indicated that his subversive influence and large bookishness partly contributed to Trump crushing Democratic candidates Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. In that same post, he said that if he were not the shadow president, "Democrats would control the House and Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate." If you believe Musk, he not only helped to nudge Trump and his running mate through the finish line but also subsequently changed the balance of Congress.

Trump has yet to tweet directly about Musk's comments on the election, but he found time to slam Musk for his behavior and explain its consequences on a political scale. On June 5, in a Truth Social post, the president wrote, "Elon was 'wearing thin'. asked him to leave, I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!"

The "EV Mandate," to which Trump was referring, was a federal policy that Musk had advocated, calling for greater use of electric vehicles. In proper form, Trump justified his reversal of the mandate as a power move that caused Musk to take a public dig at him. A few short hours before Musk's post, Trump himself discussed the state of their relationship with the media and conceded that the two may no longer be allies as they used to be.

"Elon and I had a great relationship," he told reporters at the White House on Friday, just before a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. "I don't know if we will anymore." Friction between the two moguls began shortly after Musk gave up the DOGE post in May, and Musk took to criticizing the administration's tax reform proposals. Instead, Trump, who boasted he had "done a hell of a job" for Musk, was devastated to see a public act of defiance against a policy that should have secured the CEO's unwavering allegiance.

While neither Musk nor Trump is a stranger to controversy or sensational sound bites, this is a significant detour in the two influential figures, who had previously been seen as being at least somewhat on the same page. Musk's willingness to claim credit for reconfiguring the American political landscape, down to the makeup of Congress, is a striking reminder of how much his ambitions and self-assurance extend. Only time will tell whether this public spat causes permanent harm or whether their explosive political relationship continues as usual. Donald Trump did not win alone in Elon Musk's storytelling.
