An employee at Chuck E. Cheese in Florida was arrested while in a full-size cartoonish character costume on Tuesday. The man, Jermel Jones, 41, was accused of taking a customer's credit card and making unauthorized purchases, which amounted to $105.57 worth of fraudulent transactions between July.
The theft occurred after a customer visited a Chuck E. Cheese in Tallahassee on June 28 for her daughter's birthday party. It wasn't until she saw unusual charges on her card from places she knew she hadn't been, like Whataburger, 1Smoke Shop, and Circle K, that she heard alarm bells going off. For further inquiry, she followed her transactions and found one of the illegal buys on tape. To her astonishment, the perpetrator was none other than a Chuck E. Cheese employee, easily identified by the store's famous mouse outfit.

The customer immediately called the police, and Officer Jarrett Cruz from the Tallahassee Police Department arrived at the parking lot. Once it was established that Jones was in fact employed on the day of his arrest, Cruz went to the employee's place of work. Jones's arrest adds an unusual twist to the typically wholesome reputation of the Chuck E. Cheese brand, which has long marketed itself as a family-friendly entertainment venue. Although the crime in question may seem contrary to the nature of a business that provides joy to children, it serves as a grim reminder of the difficulties that persist in keeping sensitive personal data secure from compromise in the age of identity theft.
