Former President Donald Trump has launched into a blistering attack on Elon Musk, describing the Tesla and SpaceX mogul as a "train wreck" over his recent political machinations. Musk, a controversial figure in both technology and politics, recently suggested that he might consider creating a new political party, the "America Party." However, the ever-monotonous Trump made it clear that he believes the move is reckless and the outcome is hopeless.
On July 6, Trump minced no words on his platform, Truth Social. "I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely 'off the rails," Musk wrote earlier this week. "He even wants to start a Third Political Party, despite the fact that they have never succeeded in the United States," he said, though adding that Third Political Parties have never succeeded in the U.S. "The System seems not designed for them."

Trump's blunt assessment underscores the personal breakdown between the two power players, who once shared a somewhat public backslapping relationship. That started to change after Musk quit as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in May. The split has since deepened, with Trump publicly doubting Musk's loyalty and judgment. "I've helped Elon a lot," Trump reminded reporters at a June 5 press briefing. "We had a good relationship, but I'm very disappointed in Elon." For Trump, Musk's quest to get out of the two-party box is not just dumb, but insulting. Trump, who has long seen himself as a kingmaker and disrupter in the GOP, appears to dismiss Musk's ambitions as naive and threatening.
However, for Musk, the move reflects a broader dissatisfaction with the leadership of both the Republican and Democratic parties. But in Trump's eyes, the fantasy of blazing a new political trail has proved a mirage. In the coming election cycle, those political currents could steer their running battle with one another in new directions, remaking not just their individual alliances but also the national conversation about the future of political power. What's certain is that Donald Trump is not getting aboard Elon Musk's train, and he's warning others not to buy a ticket, as well.
