The Bachelor franchise has never shied away from drama, and the latest controversy over Golden Bachelor star Mel Owens is no different. And his openness in discussing his preferred dating age range for women, between 45 and 60, certainly sparked an intense debate among viewers and Bachelor Nation. Now, franchise host Jesse Palmer is speaking out and revealing his thoughts on the backlash.
Jesse confirmed he knows all about Mel's controversial rants in an interview with Us Weekly published on July 3. Posting a link to a story about Mel on the '60 Minutes' website, Jesse wrote, "I've seen the headlines, obviously, because I'm on social media," Palmer said. "We haven't started filming Golden yet, so I haven't spent a ton of time with Mel." But despite the drama, Palmer said he felt Mel, 66, was a "good guy" based on their limited interactions to date.

Palmer was sure to let Hundley know, however, that he would not allow the topic to be ignored. "I know I'm gonna get to spend a lot more time with him pretty soon," he added. "I'm sure that's something we're going to talk about." The statement suggests that this issue may be addressed more thoroughly once filming begins on the new season.
Mel Owens' alleged comment that he prefers women in their 40s and 50s "was me being honest," he said, but the public opinion pendulum swung fast. Some viewers got the feeling Mel was being more transparent than expected, while others thought it was a bit restricting and reductive, especially considering that the show's primary goal is to highlight mature love. This disagreement over age preferences is not new among fans of "Bachelor" shows, but it has become increasingly widespread in recent years.
With the show set to debut, fans can't wait to see if this comes into play in the series' storyline. Mel Owens' dating standards are sure to spark discussion about the Golden Bachelor season. But as far as Jesse Palmer is concerned, he is ready and willing to continue the conversation, no matter how awkward things get.
