His wife, Martha Jacobi, broke the news to fans in a message in a Facebook fan group on July 10. She said James died peacefully early Tuesday morning at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, New York. "The funeral will be in early August, In New York," Jacobi wrote, "Memorial designations are still in process, pending conversations with one of the charities that was close to Jimmy's heart."

Cathcart's distinctive voice would go on to lend a voice to Pokémon, taking over the throne of a much-loved character and instilling a love for the well-known franchise in the hearts of millions worldwide. As Meowth, the mischievous, occasionally sympathetic creature, Cathcart helped turn the character into a standout presence in the Pokémon series, and it provided her a role she could easily slip into for decades on end. He also played James, the incompetent but lovable member of Team Rocket, and Professor Oak, the legendary Pokémon professor who mentored Ash Ketchum.
Cathcart's performances entertained fans of all ages for decades, and his legacy has endured, even posthumously, through his performances that continue to resonate with audiences. Jacobi thanked fans for their support, explaining the extent to which her husband cherished the happiness he brought to others through his work. Thanks to all of Jimmy's fans over the years! Giving you joy was why he worked so hard on his craft," Jacobi wrote. "Please know how much he appreciated you!"
Cathcart's death represents the passing of a legend in the Pokémon world. Although his voice may no longer be heard on the screen, his cherished portrayal of the man who delivered the weather so expertly will undoubtedly live on in the minds of Pokémon fans everywhere.
