Straight outta Marseille, France, RedLight are back with a new single, "Les dérives." The band, which was formed in 2007, throws grunge's grit, rock's feeling, and the rhythmic confidence of experimental music into a sound that can't sit still. Featuring influences from Pearl Jam and The Cure to Beastie Boys and The Prodigy, "Les dérives" is a prime display of RedLight's genre-spanning approach.
Recorded and mixed in their home studio by guitarist Dapé, the tune reflects the raw production values that punk thrived on. "Les dérives" is moody and melodic. The song's composition of power and pull, strength and squeeze, serves as a metaphor for what RedLight committed to, with the melody being nearly as powerful as a musical rebellion.
RedLight incorporates decades of rock history into something distinctly their own. "Les dérives" seems to reflect on the chaos of contemporary existence, the drifting, the detours, the difficulties of remaining centered amid changes. On "Les dérives," RedLight asserts that the spirit of rock is still kicking, truthful or otherwise.
