Zircon Skyeband revives a timeless classic with "Cut Across Shorty"

People of all ages can enjoy Zircon Skyeband's new version of "Cut Across Shorty," as it's a mix of rock and roll and country music. The band's version is the fifth song on the "Catch A Falling Star" EP which came out in early February 2026, and is the one you should listen to. It lasts four minutes and fifty seconds, which is enough time for the arrangement to grow and sound good.

"Cut Across Shorty," a song by Marijohn Wilkin and Wayne P. Walker, is significant in music history. Zircon Skyeband thinks of it as a living, breathing piece of music, and their version honors the original spirit while adding a modern touch that feels more like a choice than a feeling.

The band is great as John Brokaw's xylophone parts are unlike anyone else's, and Robert Rachelli's steady drumming and Luis Gutierrez's steady bass playing make for a layered, purposeful sound. Mark Galloway's guitar playing serves as the song's foundation, and Stephanie McDonald Johnson and Mia Bortolussi's singing adds warmth and personality without taking over the arrangement.

The sound stays clean and natural thanks to the production team, which includes producer Brokaw and recording engineers Jeff Evans and Craig White. The arrangement has a spatial quality that lets each part stand out, underscoring the band's commitment to both tradition and clarity. "Cut Across Shorty" is a thoughtful reimagining, and Zircon Skyeband shows that reinterpreting classic works means moving forward on purpose with skill and a real respect for history.
