Hailing from the heart of Sulphur Springs, Texas, Charming Scars come out swinging with their new song, "Devourer," a blistering alt-rock cut that crackles with purpose. Comprised of Carter Luera (vocals/guitar), Sal Castro (drums), and Mike Shirley (bass), the trio formed in August 2024, and they certainly aren't there to mess around.
"Devourer" is a song and an emotional purge ensconced in a punk-grunge snarl and alt-rock bite. The opening seizes you by the collar with razor-sharp tension, then barrels headfirst into distorted guitars and pounding drums that sound like they're careening away from the chaos at their backs. But it's a controlled chaos, steered precisely by a band with a sound idea of what they want to say.
Carter Luera takes the lead with the vocals here. His delivery is visceral and urgent, as though he's exorcising something with every line. His voice has a lovely tension of pain and power, raw enough to suggest an intimacy at play but bold enough to muster a crowd. And the chorus is a big, full-bodied eruption that sticks to your bones, the hook that has you yelling back at it after only a single listen.
Sal Castro pounds out a rhythmic assault that drives the song forward without reprieve, while Mike Shirley's bass holds the rage together with a thumping pulse. Collectively, the three brew up a storm that sounds as dangerous as it is unmoored but also deliberate. They may be the new kids in town, but "Devourer" proves they mean business. This band has a message and the sound to ensure you hear it.
