John Mulaney Slams Violent Threats Against Olivia Munn Over Ms. Rachel Remarks

In a time when a throwaway comment can set off digital firestorms, comedian John Mulaney is making a distinction between conversation and danger. The Emmy-winning leading man has finally spoken out about being the subject of a recent deluge of grotesque threats against his wife, actress Olivia Munn, and their two young sons sparked by what he considers to be an innocent joke about parenting preferences.

The brawl started after Munn revealed in an interview that she doesn't let the kids, Malcolm, 3, and Méi, 8 months, "watch YouTube children's content creator Ms. Rachel." And though she acknowledged there was a lot of love and even memories for Ms. Rachel's educational videos, Munn kept her opinions plain. The high-energy programming, she said, "drives me crazy," and, as a parent, she optimizes for content that she can stand to tolerate for the long haul. The escalation was breathtaking, and the couple never saw it coming.

John Mulaney hopped on Instagram Stories on June 11 to stick up for his wife and family and share the concerning harassment they have received. "An innocent comment my wife Olivia Munn made about what children's programs we like has somehow unbelievably been conflated with not caring about the deaths of children in Gaza," he wrote. "You took a nothing comment to a dark and dangerous place."

Mulaney has pointed out that Olivia has been sent abusive and threatening texts not only to her but also to their children. He called attention to the ridiculousness and danger of the outrage, pointing out that, at this stage, the response has morphed from criticism to harassment. "The people doing this are so wildly out of line and so unhelpful to any conversation," he continued. "This kind of behavior isn't activism." Munn's original comments, which reportedly ran in a deleted People Magazine interview that went live on June 8, contained nothing political or incendiary. Instead, she cast her choice as one of mental health and personal preference. The internet's response, however, has been swift and, in many cases, unkind.

Though the magazine hasn't publicly stated why it pulled the interview, the controversy is a testament to the flammable nature of public debate concerning parenting choices, even if they become politicized by accident. It's an invention of modernity where the distinctions between personal opinion and perceived ideology can easily blur, often with consequences in the offline world.

Mulaney's public statement highlights a more general troubling trend in the normalization of targeted harassment in the name of activism. Being in the public eye, Mulaney and Munn have had their fair share of criticism. But when that criticism tips over into violence, especially when small children are involved, it brings us to a necessary reckoning on where to draw the line.

Mulaney called out a culture of performative outrage, which feels increasingly louder and pervasive and uses intimidation instead of communication. His is a sober reminder that civil discourse can never flourish when threats and vitriol silence the voices of understanding.

At the center of all this is a couple working to raise their children in the way they believe is best. Agree or disagree with how they feel about children's programming, there is never, ever a conversation that should lead to the violent behavior that has been visited upon them. But Mulaney's defense is about decency in an ever-more-reflexive digital age.
