Allison Holker Reflects On Time Daughter Weslie Called Her An 'Almond Mom'

So You Think You Can Dance's Allison Holker has been brutally honest about her approach to parenting in an adorable exchange with her eldest daughter, Weslie. Weslie, now 17, weighed in on what it was like to grow up with a mom who was, in her words, a self-professed "almond mom" on her Between Us podcast. Holker's eating habits are a hit with daughters.

You may also have heard of the rise of the "almond mom," or a mom who has become an advocate for extremely healthy eating, often promoting organic foods and stringent dietary rules. For Weslie, this entailed a childhood filled with home-cooked greens, organic chicken and nuts, dried and fresh fruits, and a few packaged snacks. Weslie said her mother's dedication to a clean diet that prioritized health was unwavering, and she laughed a little at the memories.

"My entire growing up, I say this to her all the time now she was so almond mom. 'She was like, 'You have to eat greens, it's chicken every night.'" Such rules may sound strict for an adolescent, but for Holker, it was only about providing the healthiest, most balanced life she could for her children. Holker, a mother of three, couldn't help but agree with her daughter's playful accusations. She said, "I definitely was one with Weslie. I was very strict. I was cooking all the time, and her lunches for school were all the organic versions of everything." Holker prided herself on packing lunches that lacked processed snacks, opting for an assortment of dried fruits and nuts to ensure Weslie got optimal nutrition.

For Holker, though, the real driving force behind her parenting style was love and care, even if that philosophy involved some difficult conversations as Weslie grew up. If Holker's reflecting on her approach to parenting now, it's clear that she's changed significantly, letting go of her old definition of health and moving toward a more flexible, less-rigid approach to family life. As she watches her kids, Maddox and Zaia, grow up alongside Weslie, Holker is still figuring out motherhood with a few lessons and a greater understanding of what is good for her regarding physical and mental health. The "almond mom" label is a good reminder that although it's essential to focus on what's healthy, wise, and well, that middle ground is what it's all about, which Holker seems to have down pat as she continues to evolve her family's lifestyle in new ways.
